An Audio Play
It’s been a frustrating year for theatre and all those who work in the sector. Having written a couple of plays in the last year, I had hoped that I may be able to stage one of them towards the end of 2021. This was my thinking as 2020 drew to a close.
A friend with whom I used to regularly work decided several years ago she would dedicate her creative talents to audio drama. She excels in the medium and I have had the good fortune to feature in a couple of Jill Korn’s plays. It was not something I much thought about…until I realised on a cold day in January that the second wave of the pandemic threatened any possibility of theatre in 2021. I could’ve written something completely new but instead thought it might be interesting to adapt a stage play for audio. And so it is that a play I first wrote in 2009, and revived in 2016, is getting the audio treatment in 2021. A Journey Around My Room was the one play I had which lent itself well to audio with a simple re-write. It is an accessible, humorous play with a message of solidarity. The play has been successfully cast and we go into the studio next month. A completely new experience for me, I am looking forward to it. I am also looking forward to having a lasting piece of work that I can share long after the recording session has completed.
