Bring Again the Now of Then
What does it mean to slip from collective memory in your own life-time? Gertrud Grunow’s male colleagues at the Bauhaus depended upon her research to underpin their own teachings. Bring Again the Now of Then finds Gertrud in her study, reminiscing of the Bauhaus. As she files a lifetime’s worth of papers, the story of the school’s early years unfolds. It was an environment of artists, spiritualists, designers, philosophers and opinionated students in a society of revolutionaries, reactionaries, communists, conservatives, and nationalists. Sensing her end-time is near, Gertrud is eager for her work to be published. The worst that could happen is to be captured in a solitary photograph. Couldn’t happen, could it?
