OVERVIEW & CONTEXT:

How far would you go to achieve your true potential?

It is perhaps today commonplace in society to see people of great ineptitude occupy places of great power. In 2008, when the financial crisis occurred, it was still something of a novelty. There was amongst ordinary people a misplaced belief that those higher up in the pecking order could and should be able to avert calamity by deploying their skills of expertise. After all, that’s surely why the pay of a company CEO was in excess of 100 times that of the lowest paid within the same company. We were about to learn otherwise.

In 2008, I started a new job which 6 months later would become my old job. Along with my colleagues, I watched in horror as stupid decisions were made for the most political and personal of reasons. When a CEO rucks up a week after the redundancy process has begun and opens with “I’m sorry I wasn’t here last week, I was on a long planned skiing vacation” and finishes with “This isn’t easy for me but please don’t feel sorry for me”, you know you’re in a special place of stupid. The office where I worked was closed and Hollow was conceived.

Hollow was my first original play and took 3 years to write on and off. Broadly fiction, it centres on the rancorous relationship between two men oblivious to both the poisonous influence of an international player and the effect on a working community.  Although my first written play, Hollow was not the first to be produced (that garland goes to A Journey Around My Room)

Hollow was performed at Govanhill Baths, Glasgow, in October 2016. It was a sell-out before the run began.
